I Tried Purely Pinole, A Plant-Based Superfood Everyday For A Week, Here’s What Happened
Tagged: Healthy Snacks, Under $10
This week I have been testing out a new meal for breakfast called Purely Pinole Hot Cereal. I have seen some positive reviews about the ancient powerfood known as ‘pinole’ from health bloggers and was curious to discover what it is for myself.
Not going to lie…my usual breakfast is toast and a huge pot of coffee! Not exactly healthy, and usually ends up in me getting hungry and pigging out on carbs a few hours later. This lack in a nutrient-rich start to my days is partly due to laziness and mostly due to time constraint. Having a 9-month-old baby who needs tending to constantly means my meals have to be quick or they won’t happen at all.
When Native State Foods contacted me to ask if I’d like to try their Purely Pinole Hot Cereal, a breakfast meal packed with vitamins, protein, fiber and only takes a few seconds to prepare I wholeheartedly said YES!
I began researching the product while I awaited the box to arrive, and the more I learned about pinole, and the company Native State Foods, the more excited I became to try it.
First, what is Pinole?
Pinole (pih-nole) is ancient purple maize full of protein, powerful antioxidants, and fiber. It is an Aztec superfood known to fuel endurance and provide energy.
Purely Pinole is plant-based, NON-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free and fair trade. One serving nourishes 30% of your daily fiber needs and gives you 7 grams of protein (20g+ per bowl when prepared as a hot cereal with milk or milk substitute!).
Who is Native State Foods?
Native State Foods is a US company on a mission to create healthy, delicious products that are better for you, and the planet. All the while promoting fair trade by sourcing pinole from South America through ethical and sustainable business practices.
I can support that!
So for the past 7 days, I’ve started each morning with a bowl of Purely Pinole Blueberry + Banana, simply by adding hot almond milk to the powder and eating it as a hot cereal. You can also add almond milk to the powder and enjoy it in a smoothie.

My Thoughts On Purely Pinole
The first thing I noticed about this product is that it actually tastes delicious. I’ve tried protein powders and protein cereal mixes before and they always had a certain “chalky” taste to them, but I didn’t find Purely Pinole to have any chalky taste at all. Truthfully it just tastes damn good, like a blueberry muffin with a hint of chocolate and cinnamon. So that was the first win.
The second thing I enjoyed was the real blueberries! This is not a mysterious powder of supposed real ingredients – you can actually see the real ingredients in their full form.
The blueberries give an extra antioxidant boost known to help improve cardiovascular and brain function, while the bananas boost immune system health and balance blood sugar for sustained energy.
More energy means I could ease up on my daily coffee binging!

And lastly, and very importantly, Purely Pinole actually kept me feeling full throughout the day. I didn’t have my usual midday crash-and-reach-for-carbs moment.
So that was what really sold me on the product!
So Is Purley Pinole Worth It?
After one week of eating it every morning, I can happily attest that I feel full, nourished and more energized. I love that Purely Pinole is a plant-based, clean and natural meal full of protein and healthy antioxidants. And it tastes amazing!
I also love that Native State Foods, as a company is an ethical business in line with fair trade practices.
I highly recommend you give this healthy cereal a try!
